1. The 7-Stage OEM Manufacturing Process
Design Brief & Consultation
You provide your design vision — sketches, reference photos, mood boards, architectural plans, ceiling dimensions. The manufacturer's engineering team reviews feasibility, identifies potential structural or electrical challenges, and proposes initial approaches. This stage is about understanding what you want and confirming it can be built.
Technical Drawings & 3D Renderings
The manufacturer creates CAD technical drawings showing exact dimensions, crystal placement patterns, electrical routing, suspension points, and weight distribution. 3D renderings let you visualize the finished chandelier from multiple angles and in different lighting conditions. You review, request modifications, and approve the final design.
Material Sampling & Finish Selection
Physical samples are shipped to you: crystal pieces (showing cut pattern and clarity), metal finish swatches (gold, chrome, brushed, custom RAL colors), and LED module samples (showing color temperature and brightness). This stage ensures that what looks good on a screen looks good in your actual space under your actual lighting.
Prototyping
For large projects, a scaled section of the chandelier is produced — showing the crystal arrangement, finish quality, and light distribution in a representative segment. For smaller pieces, a full prototype is assembled. This is the last checkpoint before full production begins. Never skip prototyping for custom designs.
Production
Once the prototype is approved, full production begins: crystal cutting, metal frame fabrication, polishing/plating, LED wiring, and assembly. A typical hotel order of 10-20 custom chandeliers takes 3-6 weeks in production. Each unit receives the same treatment as the prototype — there is no "production shortcut" quality drop in a proper OEM process.
Quality Control & Pre-Shipment Inspection
Every custom chandelier undergoes full assembly testing before crating. This includes: electrical safety test (insulation resistance, ground continuity), light-up test (all LEDs/bulbs verified working), crystal inspection (clarity, no chips or scratches), finish inspection (uniformity, no defects), and structural load verification. Third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas) can be arranged at this stage.
Packaging, Shipping & Documentation
Chandeliers are disassembled into manageable sections, each crystal individually wrapped, placed in reinforced export crates with foam protection. Each crate includes: assembly instructions, crystal placement diagram, electrical wiring diagram, spare crystal pieces (5-10% extra), and installation hardware. Documentation includes packing list, commercial invoice, certificate of origin, and certification documents.
2. Complete Timeline: Design to Delivery
Total: 11-18 weeks from design approval to port arrival. Add 1-2 weeks for customs clearance and local delivery.
3. What to Include in Your Design Brief
✅ Complete Design Brief Checklist
- Ceiling height and room dimensions — Width, depth, ceiling height. For multi-story lobbies, note the viewing angles from mezzanine levels.
- Reference images — Photos of chandeliers you like, annotated with what you like about each (shape, crystal pattern, finish, scale). Pinterest boards or mood boards work well.
- Sketch or concept — Even a rough hand sketch helps communicate the vision better than words alone.
- Crystal type preference — K9, Austrian, or Swarovski. If unsure, note your budget range and the manufacturer can advise.
- Metal finish — Gold (polished, brushed, antique), chrome, black, champagne, rose gold, or custom RAL color.
- Desired diameter range — "About 1.2-1.5 meters" is more useful than "a big chandelier."
- LED specifications — Color temperature (2700K warm to 4000K neutral), dimming requirements (0-10V, DALI, TRIAC), smart control (if any).
- Quantity — How many units of this design. Also note if there are other chandelier designs needed for the same project.
- Installation context — Ceiling type (concrete, wood, suspended), access for maintenance (lift available or ladder only), weight restrictions.
- Target budget — Even a broad range helps the manufacturer propose realistic solutions rather than over- or under-designing.
- Target delivery date — Hotel opening date or project completion deadline, working backwards for production planning.
4. OEM Pricing: Modified Catalog vs Fully Bespoke
| Customization Level | Price Premium | Includes | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog | 0% | Standard designs, sizes, finishes | Budget-conscious, fast turnaround |
| Modified Catalog | +15-30% | Custom diameter, finish, LED upgrade, minor crystal pattern changes | 90% of hotel projects |
| Semi-Custom | +30-80% | New design using existing components, custom crystal layout, unique proportions | Boutique hotels, branded design |
| Full Bespoke | +50-200%+ | Entirely original design, custom molds, hand-forged metalwork, unique crystal cuts | Flagship lobbies, iconic landmarks |
5. Material Selection: Crystal, Metal, Finish, LED
Crystal Type
- K9 Optical Crystal — 9-11% lead oxide, refractive index 1.52, bubble-free. The standard for commercial projects. Excellent sparkle at practical cost.
- Premium K9 (Hand-Cut) — Same material, but each piece is hand-cut and polished for superior edge definition. Noticeably crisper sparkle up close. 1.5-2× K9 cost.
- Austrian Crystal — 24-30% lead oxide, refractive index 1.55. Superior brilliance. 3-5× K9 cost.
- Swarovski Crystal — 30%+ lead oxide, refractive index 1.57. Maximum sparkle and brand recognition. 5-10× K9 cost.
Frame Metal & Finish
- Stainless Steel — Durable, corrosion-resistant, lighter weight. Best for large chandeliers where weight is a concern. Available in polished, brushed, gold-plated, chrome, and PVD color finishes.
- Brass — Heavier, more expensive, but unmatched warmth and classic luxury feel. Preferred for traditional luxury hotels. Develops a patina over time unless lacquered.
- Finish durability — Electroplated finishes (gold/chrome) last 20+ years without tarnishing. Painted finishes are more economical but may show wear sooner in high-humidity environments.
LED Integration
- Standard E14/G9 bulb sockets — Most flexible. Client can choose their own bulbs. Lower cost but less design integration.
- Integrated LED strips/modules — Built into the chandelier frame for seamless appearance. Factory-calibrated color temperature and brightness. Non-replaceable by end user (requires manufacturer support for replacement).
- Smart lighting — DALI, DMX, or wireless (Zigbee/WiFi) control for scene setting, color temperature tuning, and automated scheduling. Adds 15-30% to electrical component cost.
6. OEM for Hotel Projects — Special Considerations
- Stakeholder approval workflow — Hotel projects involve interior designers, owners, operators, and sometimes brand representatives. Plan for 2-3 rounds of design review with each stakeholder group.
- Brand standards — Major chains (Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor) have specific lighting standards for color temperature, dimming protocol, and sometimes approved vendor lists. Confirm requirements before finalizing the design.
- Phased delivery — Large properties may need chandeliers delivered in phases: lobby and public areas first, guest room corridors later. Coordinate production scheduling accordingly.
- MEP coordination — Provide structural load calculations, ceiling reinforcement specifications, and electrical load requirements to the general contractor's MEP team at least 4 weeks before delivery.
- Spare parts plan — Hotels operate 24/7 for years. Include 10-15% spare crystals (instead of standard 5-10%), spare LED drivers/modules, and a maintenance manual with part numbers for reordering.
- Installation supervision — For large or complex chandeliers, arrange for manufacturer technical supervision (remote video call or on-site visit) during installation.
7. OEM Readiness Checklist
